I can't really say I like this poem, maybe I just don't like the speaker (the Duke of Ferrara). He seems to be very arrogant and controlling even though he tries hard to cover this up with his lyrical speech. I find him to be a very suspicious character, especially after we learn he could not controll his Last Duchess. We don't really learn much about him (except his 900yr old name), only how deceitful she was, which further presses the idea that maybe he killed her or at least had something to do with her death. I think he may have been envious or too controlling, which could have fueled her behavior to continue or perhaps even get worse. It never says she actually cheated, only that she flirted, which does not necessarily prove anything. I think he did kill her, and is hinting to the listener, which I believe to be a messanger of someone interested in a marriage contract with the recently widowed Duke, that his new wife had better cooperate.
When I read this poem it reminded of my sisters ex-boyfriend. It seems like the speaker loved his Duchess more than words could say but was very jealous and protective of her while he disapproved of practically everything she did. This is pretty much exactly how my sisters ex-boyfriend was. He loved her and I'm pretty sure still does more than anything. He would've done anything for her at anytime she asked but he couldn't give her enough space. He was so jealous that he didn't want her to go anywhere without him and all of her extra time was supposed to be devoted to him. It drove her crazy to the point where she left him, which is probably what the speaker's last Duchess did. She is either gone because she left him or something happened and it drove him to possibly kill her. Either way, it was his jealousy that led her to be gone and that's why the speaker can't let go.
Myt last duchess was one poemi realy could not quite understand. beinthat as it is i will confine my response to the feelings that the tone inspired. i felt immediately depressed after reading this. my blood ran a degree cooler for a couple minutes. i hope that one day i will again have a chance to anylise the poem but for now this is as good as it gets. it did have an effect on me though, despight the fact that it was not accomponied by any semblance of understanding.
